Powerful art that speaks to culture, country, and generations of story.

Pilaru Art was created by Ree Couzens to bring stories to life through paint and pixels. A Nhanda Wajarri woman from Western Australia, Ree has been painting since she was a child but officially launched Pilaru Art as a business in 2024. Through her work, she carries her culture forward with powerful artworks that capture its depth, spirit, and essence in every piece.

Meet the Artist - Rhianna Couzens

Ree was born in the Midwest of Western Australia, on Yinggarda Country in Carnarvon, with deep ancestral ties to Kalbarri and the Murchison River. As a direct descendant of Granny Jilba - one of the six apical Nhanda ancestors - she carries the strength and spirit of her culture forward through storytelling that honours country, connection, and tradition with every brushstroke.

Inspired and taught to paint by her late Uncle, artist Dougie Ryder, and guided by the stories and wisdom of the women in her family, Ree began creating art at a young age, using her creations to honor and extend the legacy of those who came before.

My art is shaped by my connection to Country - carrying our shared Nhanda Dreaming stories and painting the paths and journeys entrusted to me by others.

Pilaru

This artwork honors the powerful role Nhanda women in my family play as the keepers and carriers of our culture. Tracing back through four generations to my apical ancestor, Granny Jilba, each circle represents a generation of Nhanda women who have held our stories, language, and knowledge - safeguarding and passing them forward. Scattered throughout the artwork, the Pilaru flowers represent our deep and unbreakable connection to Country.
